so...i studied italian for about 3 weeks, but i also lived here for 5 months. so my italian skills are...bizarre.
here's the thing: i love speaking italian, and do it with a certain amount of confidence. my pronunciation isn't terrible either, so when speaking with me, most italians identify me as (obviously) a non-native speaker, but they often continue with me in italian rather than switching to english. where it gets weird is this: there are a lot of very obvious and basic words that i don't know. after a few sentences, i sound like someone who speaks the language, but is too stupid to know the names of, say, the colors, or the parts of the body. this was my conversation this morning with the pharmacist:
me (in italian): good morning! i went running this morning in the park, and i...
pharmacist (confused): what?
me: i hurt myself, on my...
pharmacist: on your what??
me: (rolls up sleeve to show scraped arm)
pharmacist: oh...on your ARM.
me: yes! can i please have some antibiotic ointment?

it is hilarious that you can say "antibiotic ointment" in italian, but not "arm."
Y tambien saber hablar español te ayuda. Es muy divertido tratar de comunicarse en una lengua que no sabes hablar. Debes quedarte alli un año en el futuro para aprender la partes del cuerpo. adios hijita
